A desire to help others is a common reason to become a massage therapist, and giving healing touch to cancer patients is certainly one way to help. During chemotherapy, cancer patients are dealing with physical, emotional, and mental challenges, from loss of taste and appetite to gastrointestinal challenges such as vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea, not to mention the bone-deep fatigue following an infusion. Even a few minutes of comfort can make all the difference in a cancer patient鈥檚 day and well-being. 精东传媒 therapists can have a hugely positive impact on cancer patients by providing this comfort. To safely deliver caring massage therapy, LMTs must be aware of the unique benefits, training requirements, and massage techniques for oncology patients.

Benefits of Receiving 精东传媒 During Chemotherapy & Other Cancer Treatments

Reduced Pain. According to , A 2003 study of cancer patients from the University of Minnesota found that massage reduced the need for pain medications. The researchers found that any light healing touch will reduce anxiety and pain, but only massage was found to actually reduce the need for pain medications.

Increased Relaxation and Less Stress. An article on the reflects on how allopathic medical providers are hyper-focused on killing cancer cells in their segment of the body, and less aware of the holistic healing cancer patients need. 精东传媒 can contribute many whole-body benefits, including stress reduction and general relaxation.听

Energy Boost. Fatigue is one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy, as the body must work hard to process the intense drugs of a chemo regimen. 精东传媒 can help cancer patients feel more energized.

Anxiety Relief. BreastCancer.org also describes a five-week University of Miami study comparing massage and progressive muscle relaxation therapy. While both groups of patients reported reduced anxiety, the patients receiving massage also reported reduced depression.听

The biochemical aspect of this research is fascinating. Among the massage recipients, researchers found increased dopamine as well as higher levels of white blood cells. This last finding is especially important among cancer patients, who are in an immune-compromised state due to chemotherapy treatment.

Cancer patients receiving massage also report improved sleep and diminished nausea.听

No research has found that massage causes cancer to spread. In other words, studies suggest it is safe for cancer patients to receive massage during chemotherapy treatments.

精东传媒 During Chemo Treatments: Specialized Training Requirements

Before providing care, LMTs should educate themselves thoroughly on oncology massage. In-depth training programs cover a multitude of topics, including the following principles for providing massage to cancer patients.

  1. Work with Medical Providers. Gayle MacDonald, author of Medicine Hands: 精东传媒 Therapy for People with Cancer, consulting with the patient鈥檚 doctor prior to massage treatment, particularly for patients who are in active treatment. (She typically doesn鈥檛 take this step for those who have been in remission for more than a year.) She may ask for a doctor鈥檚 note if consultation is not possible. Finally, MacDonald provides a note to doctors explaining that the massage is simply for rest and relaxation.
  2. Work around ports and post-surgery inflammation. A port is a piece of medical equipment that simplifies chemotherapy infusions by providing an easy way to deliver intravenous drugs without the need to put in a new IV line before each treatment. It is often surgically installed in the chest, with a line going straight into the heart. 精东传媒 therapists must understand how to safely work around ports.

Chemotherapy patients may also be healing from surgery. Knowing how to massage around swollen areas is key for LMTs.
  3. Use light pressure. Deep massage methods are contraindicated for cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy. Chemo treatments cause a decrease in red and white blood cells, such that bruising is more likely. Moreover, if cancer has spread to a patient鈥檚 bones, heavy pressure is dangerous. For patients in active treatment, light touch is best. As such, Swedish massage may not be ideal. Craniosacral, reiki, and polarity work are good choices.
  4. Positioning considerations post-surgery. Depending on the type of cancer, patients may need to stay in a prone position after surgery. Following breast cancer surgery, for instance, patients must await a green light from their doctor before lying belly-down. Ask the patient about any areas that should be avoided. For instance, if a lymph node has been removed as part of breast cancer surgery, it may be best to avoid the underarm area.
  5. Lymphedema considerations. If a patient has lymphedema following surgery, use lymphatic drainage massage. This massage modality can also serve patients who hope to avoid lymphedema by encouraging good lymphatic flow.

In September 2026, we’re offering . This hands-on workshop explores the foundational principles, protocols, and adaptations needed to safely and effectively support clients living with cancer and the side effects of treatment. While society seems to have moved on from COVID, some patients still battle with it. These 鈥渓ong-haulers鈥 face a unique set of symptoms. According to medical journal The Lancet, long-haul COVID symptoms usually last for more than seven months. Let鈥檚 define long-haul COVID (formally known as post-COVID syndrome), examine common symptoms, and review how massage therapy can help. We鈥檒l also include suggestions for therapists hoping to serve clients with long-haul COVID.

What is long-haul Covid or Post-COVID Syndrome?

According to the September 2021 Journal of the American Medical Association, about 10% of those who are infected with COVID will become long-haulers. That number could be even higher鈥攁 found that 30% of COVID sufferers experience long-term symptoms and 鈥渨orse health and quality of life.鈥 Moreover, 8% of respondents in that study reported that they were no longer able to do everyday tasks, such as 鈥渓ift heavy objects, or stand or walk unassisted for more than a short period of time.鈥 In contrast with most who contract the disease, those with long-haul COVID (AKA 鈥渓ong-haulers鈥) suffer symptoms for months or even years. Some studies suggest up to half of all those who catch COVID will experience at least one long-term symptom. As published in , 91% of online respondents who suffer post-COVID syndrome require more than 35 weeks to recover. Let鈥檚 take a look at their most common symptoms.

Common Symptoms of 精东传媒 Clients with long-haul Covid
While the range of symptoms among long-haulers is broad, long-term inflammation, memory loss/brain fog, and decreased physical ability are typical. Secondary mental health complications鈥攕uch as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and panic attacks鈥攎ay follow.

Additionally, those with long COVID are likely to present on the massage table with:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Inability to engage in activities such as exercise
  • Short-windedness, breathlessness
  • Pain in joints and muscles
  • Insomnia
  • Digestion/GI tract issues
  • Heart palpitations
  • Mood changes
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Loss of smell and taste that won鈥檛 resolve听
  • Coughing

These are only the most common symptoms of long-haul COVID. Chronic pain is a predominant symptom for long-haulers; some may find it impossible at times to get out of bed as a result.听

How 精东传媒 Therapy can Help those with long-haul Covid
In many ways, long-haul COVID remains a mystery to researchers, who are still unsure why some people experience mild, lingering symptoms such as headaches and muscle/joint pain, while others have more debilitating symptoms. Writing for , LMT David Weintraub relays his experience treating 40 massage clients with long-term COVID. He has found that massage therapy can ease headaches and muscle/joint pain in this population. He speculates that massage therapy can also ameliorate respiratory, digestive, and cognitive symptoms by 鈥渞eteaching the client鈥檚 nervous system鈥 to release its protective response against COVID.听

Further, Mr. Weintraub points out that massage therapy can provide quick relief for functional symptoms such as coughing stemming from tight sternocleidomastoid muscles. However, physical therapy or other specialist treatment may be required before massage therapy can help with structural symptoms, such as headaches due to neurological degeneration. He focuses particularly on efficient breathing following COVID infection, as the disease often causes the body to rely on secondary breathing muscles. 精东传媒 therapists can help clients return to efficient, diaphragmatic breathing by gently compressing abdominal muscles, assuming the client鈥檚 body and mind are relaxed enough to avoid a stress response.

Tips for 精东传媒 Therapists on how to best serve clients with Long-Haul Covid

Your massage therapy training probably didn鈥檛 include information on how to assist clients with long-haul COVID, but at this point it鈥檚 likely you鈥檒l treat someone meeting this description. Here are a few ways to cater your treatment to long-haulers.

  • Include relevant questions in your intake form. Among conditions, you may choose to include a tick box for long-haul COVID, as its varying symptoms can make it tricky to detect. Strong client communication is key, as so many different symptoms fall under the umbrella of post-COVID syndrome.
  • Don鈥檛 over-treat. Recall that long-haul COVID can cause exhaustion, even following everyday activities. While a client may feel all right during treatment, they may be tired that evening or the next day, and this weariness may be accompanied by an outburst of other symptoms. Prevent exhaustion and symptom flare-ups by going slowly in your massage therapy treatment. Limit intensity, duration, frequency and treatment type, gradually increasing these metrics over time. Leave days between treatments.听 Remember that the pain of long-haul COVID has different mechanisms than typical muscular-skeletal pain.
  • Activate a Parasympathetic Response. Even clients who never contracted COVID may display symptoms of being stuck in a stress response. After all, we all lived through a frightening time of uncertainty during the pandemic. Long-haulers are likewise prone to these stress response symptoms, which are similar to those who have suffered PTSD, and include muscular hypertension, digestive problems, brain fog, and headaches. Effective massage techniques for releasing an overactive stress response will help relax muscles, increase circulation, and signal safety to the nervous system.听 More advanced techniques may target the diaphragm, psoas, and ancillary breathing muscles.听

If you鈥檙e an LMT, think back to your graduation from massage school. At that time, could you have anticipated the changes the COVID pandemic would bring to the massage industry? Probably not. Ours is an ever-changing field, so consistent, up-to-date massage therapy training is critical. East West College of the Healing Arts offers a range of CE courses each semester for professionals in massage. Portland鈥檚 education district is our home, making classes conveniently accessible by multiple public transit lines or by car. The Choosing a 精东传媒 School Podcast is an excellent resource for anyone wondering how to become a massage therapist. Today we鈥檙e examining the episode featuring Til Luchau, a world-renowned therapist who in 2018 was named 精东传媒 Magazine鈥檚 first 精东传媒 All-Star. Aspiring LMTs can stand on the shoulders of this massage therapy giant by attending to his advice.

The Story of Til Luchau鈥檚 Career in 精东传媒

Til Luchau pursued several career paths prior to massage therapy; he has been a foreign car mechanic, an Outward Bound instructor, and a high school teacher. He was first exposed to hands-on healing while studying psychotherapy at the Esalen Institute. There, Til was exposed to key concepts including Gestalt therapy and bioenergetics, and influenced by those trained by Ida Rolf, Moshe Feldenkrais, and Milton Trager. While completing his psychotherapist training, Til continued to pursue massage therapy.

Today, Til Luchau is a Lead Instructor and Director of Advanced-Trainings.com. He is also a Certified Advanced Rolfer, having taught for two decades at the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute, the massage school specializing in Structural Integration. He authored the Advanced Myofascial Techniques textbook series, and his series titled 鈥淢yofascial Techniques鈥 and 鈥淪omatic Edge鈥 have been featured in 精东传媒 Magazine since 2009. As an established teacher in the massage therapy field, he has taught thousands of LMTs in more than 20 different countries around the world. In 2015 he was inducted into the 精东传媒 Therapy Hall of Fame. He continues to provide therapy from his Boulder, Colorado private practice听听听

Til Luchau鈥檚 Advice for Aspiring 精东传媒 Therapy Students

While your best bet is to listen to Til鈥檚 entire interview on the Choosing a 精东传媒 School Podcast, here are a few highlights:

鈥淭he really good therapists are the ones who inspire their clients.鈥
Exceptional therapists not only provide superb manual healing; they also inspire their clients to choose healthy lifestyles. How? By authentically pursuing their interests, thereby putting their whole selves鈥搈ind, body, and spirit鈥搃nto their work.

鈥淕o for it. Don鈥檛 worry about [your educational pathway] being just the right thing right now.鈥
Til鈥檚 decades of experience have taught him that the right path will appear as you choose opportunities that resonate with your authentic self. If he could give his twenty-year-old self advice, it would be not to worry that a single choice will limit future options. Rather, his journey has revealed that multiple doors open when you choose what deeply attracts you.

鈥淸精东传媒 therapy] can be a full calling. It will give you back as much as you put into it.鈥
Til warns that multi-tasking only dilutes experience. Even if pursuing massage therapy as a second career through evening and weekend classes, (as offered at several Oregon massage schools) he emphasizes being present to the current moment. That means not texting under the desk, and not trying to work too many jobs at once. Wherever you are, be there鈥搉ot mentally dialed into another place or time.

Hopefully, those tidbits have enticed you to listen to the whole conversation. If so, here鈥檚 how to access the Til Luchau episode of the Choosing A 精东传媒 School Podcast, according to your preferred platform.

While we have posted on the educational and assessment requirements for becoming a massage therapist in the state of Oregon, we鈥檝e never discussed the actual process of applying for a license, which is complex. As this step is crucial in any Oregon massage therapy career, we encourage those working toward LMT status to bookmark this page for easy reference.

What is the process for applying for a massage therapy license in Oregon?

As in most government procedures, there are multiple steps to follow. A helpful frame of mind is to go step by step, crossing off one item at a time.

The (OMBT)has established the following steps to apply for a license of massage therapy:

  • Register your application and submit payment. . The application and background check fee is $147.25.
  • Complete electronic fingerprinting. Follow the instructions from the state for electronic fingerprinting. (See Fingerprinting section below.) By doing your fingerprints when you start your application, you let the OMBT begin your background check immediately.
  • Receive email with login info. After submitting your online registration request and fee, the website will redirect you to your application. You will also receive an email notification with your log-in information, namely your customer ID and a pin.听
  • Complete your online application, including documentation. Fill out your application on the state鈥檚 massage . (See below to learn which documentation is required in the application.)
  • Note: If you said 鈥測es鈥 to any of the character questions on your application, you鈥檒l need to submit documentation and a narrative. So gather court records, arrest reports, and other official documents before starting the application.听
  • Wait for the Board to review. Sit back and kick your feet up as you wait for the Board to look over your application, fees, and supporting documents.听
  • Look for an email with the Jurisprudence Exam login info. The state will send you an email with the link and login you鈥檒l need to fill out the online Jurisprudence Examination.听
  • Pay for your Initial License. If the above steps are completed, the state will send you a payment request for $100-$200. (See section below for costs.)
  • Receive your license! Once your initial license payment is received, your license will be issued as an electronic document via email.

What documentation will I need to apply for my initial Oregon massage therapy license?

Here are the items you鈥檒l need to gather to support your LMT application:

  • Official transcripts, which must be in a sealed envelope
  • A passport-sized color photograph (2鈥漻2鈥) that鈥檚 no more than 12 months old
  • A valid ID issued by the government; examples include a driver鈥檚 license or passport
  • A list of three character references who do not live with you; however they may be relatives
  • A copy of your current BLS (Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers) certification
  • National Written Examination results. Qualifying exams including the MBLEX, NCBTMB, and CESI.
NOTE: The exam results must come straight from the exam provider; you cannot submit them yourself.

How do I complete Electronic Fingerprinting for my initial Oregon LMT license?
All new massage therapy license candidates in Oregon must complete a national criminal background check. This process requires electronic fingerprinting, including a $47.25 processing fee paid to the Board when you register your application, as well as a $12.50 fee paid to the fingerprinting service (Fieldprint).听

Here are the steps you鈥檒l need to follow to schedule an appointment for electronic fingerprinting for an Oregon massage therapy license:

  1. Go to 听 and enter the Fieldprint code FPORMassTherapistsDAS.听
  2. Select the 鈥淪chedule an Appointment鈥 button.
  3. Create a new profile by entering your email address under 鈥淣ew Users/Sign Up,鈥 and hitting the 鈥淪ign Up鈥 button. Create a Password, select a security question, and select 鈥淪ign Up and Continue.鈥澨
  4. Fill out the contact and demographic information (which is mandated by the FBI) and select a fingerprinting appointment and location.听
  5. When you鈥檙e done, print the confirmation page, and bring it with you to your fingerprinting appointment, as well as two forms of ID.

Questions about this process may be directed to Fieldprint; their customer service number is 877-614-4364, and their email address is customerservice@fieldprint.com.

How much does it cost to apply for a massage therapy license in Oregon?

As of August, 2022, you can expect to pay $259.75-$359.75 to apply for your Oregon massage therapy license. That breaks down to $100 for the application fee, $47.25 for the fingerprint processing fee, a $12.50 fee for the electronic fingerprint provider, and $135-$270 for the initial license fee. Why the range? Because renewal is based on your birth month and year. If you were born in an even numbered year, you will renew in your birth month even numbered year, no matter when your license was granted. Therefore, the fee is $100 if your first renewal will occur less than 12 months from the date of issuance for your initial license, and $200 if your first renewal will occur more than 12 months from your initial license. Note that these costs do not include your tuition, the costs of your written licensing exam, nor any costs incurred in obtaining your BLS-CPR certification.

The road to massage therapy licensure is rewarding, enlightening, and challenging. But for any Oregonian who wants to practice massage, Portland to John Day, the end goal is the same: successfully adding the letters 鈥淟MT鈥 (Licensed 精东传媒 Therapist) to one鈥檚 name. If you鈥檙e researching massage therapy training in Oregon, it鈥檚 key to select programs that will empower you to gain licensure.听

To do that, you must understand what the state requires to become an LMT. It鈥檚 helpful to work backward from that audacious goal, so that every step you take in the journey leads in the direction of your final destination, with minimal detours. To that end, we鈥檙e presenting how to become an LMT in the state of Oregon. The last time we wrote on Oregon massage therapy licensure was in 2014, and requirements have certainly changed since then.

How to Become a Licensed 精东传媒 Therapist in Oregon

As determined by the Oregon State Board of 精东传媒, licensure qualification to practice massage therapy in Oregon mandates the following:

  1. Educational Requirements

The Board prescribes a minimum of 625 hours of massage education from a school that has been licensed by the state, approved by the state, or accredited by a US Department of Education recognized accrediting agency. Those hours must be gained in certain subjects, as follows.

  • At least 200 hours of courses in the health sciences, specifically Anatomy and Physiology, Pathology, and Kinesiology.
  • At least 300 hours of 精东传媒 Theory and Practical Application, Clinical Practice, Business Development, Sanitation, Communication, and Ethics.
  • The remaining 125 hours may be in any of the areas listed above.
  1. Jurisprudence (Law) Exam Requirement

In addition to the educational requirements, Oregon also requires LMT applicants to pass the , which is a test covering the Oregon massage law. That test requires a score of 80% to pass, but there is no limit to the number of times an applicant may take the test.听

  1. National 精东传媒 Examination Requirement

Finally, candidates must take and pass a national written massage examination that has been approved by the Board. The approved tests include the , the , and the CESI. The exam results must come directly from the exam provider.

These are the requirements for eligibility for massage license application. In a future post, we will outline the actual application process for those who have completed all of the requirements listed above.

If you鈥檙e a massage therapy student or massage school applicant, or you鈥檙e just curious about pursuing your dream of becoming a massage therapist, we encourage you to bookmark this page as a handy reference. Certain portals in history change how we think, live, and act. A world war, for instance, changes everyone who lived through it. COVID may be our era鈥檚 catalytic event. Looking back over the last two years, it is clear that many of us will never be the same. The pandemic has altered nearly every aspect of life, and the workforce is no exception. Let鈥檚 examine how the Great Resignation of 2021 has pushed many people to leave their positions, and why massage careers are attracting many to shift gears.听

What is the Great Resignation?
In 2021, millions of people left their jobs, even though the economic outlook was not rosy. Although the Omicron variant loomed, and higher wages through job-hopping were not guaranteed, many Americans decided to quit. As explains, the labor department calls these 鈥渜uits,鈥 and tracks them month-to-month. Last year earned the moniker The Great Resignation because it broke records for quits. In September, October, and November, more than 4 million people quit each month.

What鈥檚 driving this collective abdication? As with many things economical, there is no simple answer, but data suggests several factors. In historically low-paying jobs, some wage increase occurred, allowing workers to quit for higher wages elsewhere. The service industry falls into this category. In other underpaid industries, such as retail, workers saw that they could switch careers for more pay and better benefits. Parenthood also influenced workers鈥 decisions, with 鈥1.4 million fewer mothers actively engaged with the labor force鈥 in September and October of 2021. Child care uncertainty required parents to stay home with children more frequently.

Overall, The Guardian article finds, there are 鈥渕any reasons to suspect that many quit in search of better work opportunities, self employment, or, simply, better pay.鈥 This conclusion is certainly reflected in the inquiries to our massage school admissions office.

COVID has Changed Priorities, Pulling many toward 精东传媒 Careers

People from all over the country call our Portland, Oregon massage school, asking how to become a massage therapist. We鈥檝e recently fielded calls from as far away as Florida, Minnesota, Canada, and Washington DC. People are talking to our admissions officers about why they鈥檙e massage-certification-curious. Here are the most common sentiments we hear on those calls.

Top 7 Reasons People are Kickstarting 精东传媒 Careers Post-COVID

Common sentiments from people who have contacted the EWC admission department with interest in becoming an LMT include:

  1. 鈥淣ow my job is obsolete.鈥
  2. 鈥淲hat I do is unfulfilling and now I want to do something meaningful.鈥
  3. 鈥淲hy the heck not pivot when I can鈥檛 keep doing what I was doing before?鈥
  4. 鈥淲hen Plan A doesn鈥檛 work, this is a career that will give me usable skills.鈥
  5. 鈥淚鈥檝e just been sitting at home, why not follow through on my dreams?鈥
  6. 鈥淚鈥檝e always worked with people, and now I鈥檓 burnt out. I want a job where people are happy to see me and even happier after their time with me.鈥 We hear this from those who are burnt out from helping professions (such as social work).
  7. 鈥淚鈥檓 looking for a job that feeds my soul, and I鈥檓 not willing to wait anymore.鈥澨

Beyond these personal reasons, this is a practical time to start massage careers because demand is high. Our alumni network reports that current practitioners are extremely busy, with many booked out for months. Following quarantines, people are eager to receive touch. (As a side note, check out our reflections on how Coronavirus quarantines spurred touch deprivation.) Many massage companies are actively hiring, so there is a strong need for massage therapists, particularly knowledgeable and experienced LMTs from top-notch massage schools.听
